64 Connecticut Companies received SBIR/STTR grants in 2010

Senator Blumenthal applauds honorees, which captured $38 million in federal R&D grants in 2010

The Connecticut SBIR Office, an initiative of Connecticut Innovations (CI), today honored the 64 Connecticut companies that won 2010 federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) awards with a celebration at the Inn at Middletown. The federal SBIR and STTR programs provide more than $2 billion in competitive federal research and development grants each year to small, high-tech, innovative businesses throughout the U.S.

Speakers addressing the audience of Connecticut entrepreneurs included: U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal; Catherine Smith, chair, Connecticut Innovations, and commissioner, Department of Economic and Community Development; Mun Choi, Ph.D., professor and dean, School of Engineering, University of Connecticut; and Deb Santy, director, Connecticut SBIR Office. Representatives from Connecticut’s congressional offices were also on hand to congratulate the winners.

Santy thanked the University of Connecticut School of Engineering for sponsoring the event and provided metrics showing the state is continuing to bring in substantial federal dollars.

“This year Connecticut companies won 138 awards,” Santy said. “When you add up all three phases of this program, including Phase III commercialization, the total dollar amount for the state is $60 million.”

The event was hosted by the Connecticut SBIR Office and sponsored by the University of Connecticut School of Engineering.
